Zaching Against Cancer Scholarship

THE ZACHING SPIRIT AWARD SCHOLARSHIP 

Are you a high school senior who has exelled in High School while overcoming personal hardship relating to cancer? The Zaching Against Cancer Foundation (ZACF) is proud to present six Spirit Award Scholarships to Maryland students. Hardships include being a cancer survivor, a caregiver for someone with cancer or a relative of a person with cancer. For 2018 the ZACF will provide six $2,500 scholarships to Maryland High School students planning to attend a two or
four year college. Two scholarships will be awarded to Centennial High School Students, two scholarships will be awarded to Howard County students attending any other Howard County High School and two scholarships will be awarded to students attending High School in other Maryland counties. Students at private schools are also welcome to apply.

The criteria for these scholarships are as follows:

1. Minimum 2.0 GPA.
2. Must be a senior in high school.
3. Must plan to attend a two or four year university within the following calendar year of receipt of scholarship.
4. Must have overcome some sort of significant hardship, medical challenge and/or family issue relating to cancer during their life.
5. Complete the 5 sections of the nomination form, including 3 individual nomination forms.
6. Is not a family member of a Zaching Against Cancer Foundation Board or Scholarship Selection Committee Member.

        ELIGIBILITY:               

·         The applicant must be a dependent child of an active duty, retired, or deceased United States Navy (USN) service member.

·         The USN service member in question must: (a) currently reside within the Naval District of Washington (NDW), defined as “the District of Columbia; the Maryland counties of Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's, and St. Mary's; the Virginia counties of Loudoun, Fauquier, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford, King George, Westmoreland, Arlington, and the cities within their outer boundaries;”(b) currently serve in a command situated within NDW; or (c) have, if retired, previously served in a command situated within NDW.

·         The applicant must be in his or her senior year of an accredited high school or program and reside within NDW.

·         For the 2015-2016 academic year, the applicant must have applied for acceptance as a full-time student at an accredited institution, such as a two- or four- year undergraduate college, a visual or performing arts school, or a vocational/technical school.   If awarded a scholarship, the student must use the monies provided during the 2015-2016 academic year.

·         The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and possess a valid military dependent identification card.  This identification card must be shown upon request.

   InSTRUCTIONS:        

·         The entries on this application form must be complete, accurate, and legible. They must be typewritten or printed in black ink.

·         Ensure that the information you enter about your sponsor accurately describes his or her current status. For example, if the sponsor is on active duty, the information must describe his/her current affiliation, status, etc. If he/she is retired or deceased, the affiliation, status, etc, must be that which pertained at the time of his/her retirement or death.

·         Fill in all information requested. If the answer is “none” or “not applicable”, please make that statement.

·         Review the form for completeness and all answers for correctness. Use this year’s current form. Do not send resumes or copies of awards. Provide only the information requested.

·         Sign the application form in all appropriate places and ensure that your sponsor does as well. (If your sponsor is unable to sign the application, please state why he/she is unable to sign and who is signing in your sponsor’s place). There are two different forms that must be signed.  APPLICANTS WILL BE INELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION IF ANY SIGNATURES ARE MISSING!

Optimist Club Scholarship

Deadline: April 15

The three are

      1)      Calvert Optimist-Knapp Scholarship - $8,000 with payments of $2,000 for up to four-years of continuing education.

     2)      Calvert Optimist Scholarship - $6,000 with payments of $1,500 for up to four-years of continuing education.

     

The basic requirements for submission are

 1)the student be a Calvert County High School graduate; 2)submission of a completed Application

 3) an essay on the students educational goals. 

Applications are reviewed by a committee of Club members and successful recipients are notified by mail.

Procedures:
-Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the Optimist Club of Calvert.
-Applicants will be judged as to qualities of character, citizenship and scholastic ability. Other major considerations will include financial need and thoughtfulness in completing the application form.

Two Year or Tech School Scholarship!

The Optimist Club of Calvert offers an annual one time vocation award of $3,000 for students residing in Calvert County. This award must be used for advanced training at any trade or technical school or community college that is approved by the Optimist Club. Only two year colleges are permitted.

Requirements:
-Must reside in Calvert County and be in the current graduating class of Calvert County high school.
-Children, step-children and grand children of members of Optimist club are not eligible.
-The vocational award can only be used at two year programs

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship

JRF Scholars receive up to $30,000 over four years to complement the financial aid they receive from their colleges or universities. In addition, JRF covers expenses for Scholars to attend the annual four-day “Mentoring and Leadership Conference” in New York City and other regional events. Through its Mentoring and Leadership Development Program, the Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to $30,000 over four years to minority high school students showing leadership potential and demonstrating financial need to attend an accredited 4-year college or university of their choice. The required components of the Jackie Robinson Foundation application are: The online application, which includes four essay questions; A professional, hi-resolution digital photo (headshots only, in a JPEG format) – you may submit a high school senior graduation photo; One letter of recommendation (e.g. a teacher, a mentor, a guidance counselor, an employer); SAT or ACT scores: If you have taken the SAT or ACT more than once, please enter your best scores from each test. Southern Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce (SAACC) Scholarship

Southern Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce (SAACC) Scholarship

Program will be awarding 2- $1000 scholarships again this year to students in the Southern Anne Arundel County area, which includes Northern High School, Southern High School and South River High School plus any private schools in the area. This scholarship could also be awarded to a current College student still living in the area.

The Requirements to Apply for the Scholarship are:

1. You must be a resident of Southern Anne Arundel County, MD (South of the South River) or Northern Calvert

County (Dunkirk, Owings, North Beach or Chesapeake Beach).

2. You have a history of community involvement.

3. You must have a good scholastic history (at least a 2.5 GPA). Attach a current Transcript to your Cover Sheet along with your Transcript Addendum.

4. You are currently enrolling in a post-secondary education program for Fall, 2018

5. You must complete and submit the enclosed Cover Sheet along with the following:

a. You submit at least one letter of recommendation from a SAACC member or other sponsoring adult.

(Example: guidance counselor, teacher, coach, employer, minister);

b. Write an essay (See attached Essay Guidelines); and

c. Include any additional information that may advance your candidacy.

Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarship

The Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarships were established by the Association of School Business Officials of Maryland and the District of Columbia to assist those citizens of the State and/or District who require financial assistance to secure a college education. Scholarships are awarded to deserving undergraduate students pursuing a career in Business or Education at an accredited institution of higher education within Maryland or the District of Columbia. Dwight P. Jacobus was the first Executive Director of ASBO.

Number of Scholarships
Ten (10) scholarships may be awarded each year. At least one scholarship will be awarded to an individual enrolled in an approved program leading to teacher certification.

Criteria for Award
Awards are made by the Association of School Business Officials of Maryland and the District of Columbiabased upon:

• Scholastic achievement
• Financial need
• Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores or American College Test (ACT) scores
• Quality of extra-curricular achievements

Value of Award

Each scholarship has a value of $1,000.00 for the school year awarded; to be paid directly to the school in which the recipient is enrolled.

Renewal

Each recipient may retain the award subject to the following conditions:

• A recipient must reapply for continued scholarship assistance annually
• The recipient must continue to be accepted for admission to the undergraduate program in education or business
• The recipient must be enrolled full-time as defined by the recipient's attending school
• The recipient must submit proof of continued academic good standing (minimum 3.0 GPA)
• The recipient may receive the award for not more than four years

Eligibility

Scholarships may be awarded only to persons who have:

• Been residents of Maryland or the District of Columbia for at least one year preceding the date of award
• Been accepted for admission as a full time student (as defined by the recipient's attending school)
• Demonstrated a financial need
• A minimum 2.0 overal GPA

Applicants Who Will Be Considered

• High School graduates
• Current freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior college students

A student who wishes to be considered must file an application and supporting documents with the Chair of the Scholarship Committee for ASBO of Maryland and the District of Columbia, no later than March 1. Correspondence must be postmarked by March 1 and sent to:

ASEC Scholarship Program Application

$1000 Award

Eligibility Criteria:

• United States Citizen
• Seniors who attend a high school in the tri-county (Charles, Calvert or St. Mary’s)
• GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Acceptance to an accredited college or university in a 4 year degree program granting full-time curriculum
• Interest in pursuing education in these disciplines: Engineering, Science, Math or Cyber Software
• Employees of ASEC and their immediate family members are not eligible.

Instructions:

Please download and complete the application below. The entire application packet must be received by April 6, 2018. The signed and completed application must be returned with the following documents:

• Copy of your college/university acceptance letter
• Most recent grade transcript
• Two letters of recommendation (can be from Teachers/Counselors/Sport Coach)
• List of other scholarships/awards won
• Submit an essay on this topic “Describe a problem you would like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge or research query. Explain what steps you took or could be taken to solve the problem.”

Cohen & Jaffe Scholarship

The Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, LLP Scholarship Program is designed to help high school students (upon graduation from high school) or college students who are interested in attending an institution of higher education. ELIGIBILITY – APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent U.S. resident.
• Be accepted to an institution of higher learning.
• Be graduating high school or receiving GED within 9 months.
• Scholarship program available to students entering their first year of undergrad only.
• Employees of the Law Office of Cohen & Jaffe, LLP, Consultwebs.com, Inc., their boards of directors and immediate family members are not eligible for this essay contest.

REQUIREMENTS:

The following documents must be provided for consideration (.doc, .docx, or .pdf format only) to the attention of Richard Jaffe via email only to Scholarship@cohenjaffe.com.

• An official copy of a current academic transcript.
• Proof of legal residency in U.S. (i.e. birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, permanent resident card, etc.).
• Proof of acceptance to an institution of higher learning. Should a winner be chosen that is still waiting on an acceptance letter, candidate will have until June 15th to provide proof of acceptance before forfeiting the prize.
• A one-page essay of no less than 500 and no more than 750 words on one of the following topics:

1. General
   Write about a significant situation in your life that has caused you to change your outlook and behavior on life. How did this situation cause you to make a life change? How have you used your experience to help or educate others?
2. Distracted Driving
   Distracted Driving remains a significant issue in New York and throughout the United States resulting in numerous car accidents, severe injuries and death. Explain the severity of the issue, the dangers and risks associated with distracted driving, include facts and statistics and laws that have been implemented in order to deal with the issue. Also include personal stories of what you have done to be an advocate and spread awareness on the dangers of texting and driving.
3. Traumatic Brain Injury
   It is estimated that 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries occur each year. We understand the devastating effects of head injuries and we’re committed to aggressively representing victims injured. Explain to us the impact a TBI has had on your life. Your essay should relate your personal experience, and how you would like to educate others on the invisible dangers of a head injury.

AWARD:

One applicant will be awarded a $1000 scholarship for first prize, one applicant will be awarded $500 for runner-up, and three applicants will be awarded $250 for honorable mention. Law Firm Scholarship award recipients will be notified of the selection on or before June 1, 2018.

The Law Firm Scholarship is to be used exclusively for tuition at an institution of higher learning and related expenses such as b

ooks, supplies, etc. An award check will be made payable to the award recipient’s school and/or supplier of books, supplies, etc. to cover these expenses. Award winners are expected to submit receipts in accordance with IRS regulations.

DEADLINE:
